Films that don’t need comments, off screen voice but are comprehensive by they depiction only – that’s what I call real films – with time will be in serious demand. For instance for street or walls design”.
Sergei Loznitsa
Loznitsa was born in Belarus in 1964 and grew up in the Ukraine. As a trained mathematician/ engineer he initially worked at the Institute for Cybernetics in Kiev for a number of years, where he was involved in the projects 'Development of the Expert System' and 'Artificial Intelligence' before embarking on a degree in film directing at the Pan-Russian Institute for Cinematography in the 'Art Film' department. The film was immediately awarded the Golden Dove at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary Film, and was equally well received in other countries, winning a total of eleven awards, in countries such as Israel, Russia, Bulgaria and Spain.
A series of further documentaries followed suit, among them 'Life, Autumn' (1998), 'The Halt' (2000), 'The Settlement' (2001), 'Portrait' (2002), 'Landscape' (2003), 'The Factory' (2004) and 'Blockade' (2005), that emulated the success of his filmic debut at festivals across Europe and beyond.
